The most powerful method of understanding a culthure is to find its outside in some way. Culture can only be fully and deply understood when it is seen by another culture, though even then there is the potentional for yet another culture to perceive more. Cultural significances and meanings can only be revealed when they are seen in relation to other meanings, held by others in difffrent situetions. Such cultural contacts are like a kind of conversation or dialogue, whihc brings out meanings of which people within a culture may not be aware. When we come into contact with a foreign culture, we can ask new quetions, and these quetions may not be ones which come from the pople of that culture. At the same time, the answers from a foreign culture will often ask questions about our own culture, and these questions, and the answers we give, might not be ones we would have condidered without the contact and dialogue with an outside culture. However, this dialogue between cultures does not necessarily cause thouse cultures to become one unified whole, but insted each culture keeps its own identity, and each gorws and becomes more open though contact.

Honjo-kasuri

Honjo-kasuri started in Honjo-city and Kodama-county, north part of saitama prefecture since where ware very active of growing of silkworms. Originally farm family’s daughters weaved for their own workday’s clothes then it became industry. However it is hard to find it now even. Only over 80 years still keep it.
At 27of May in 2006, Sakaeya welcomed Mr Akira Arakawa who is a traditional craftsman and his wife and got the chance to show their weaving technique to our customers　and let them try it. TV Saitama came the event then they introduced us on the TV.

Sakaeya's 50 annual anivesary event!

On Sunday 26th of nov, we had a Sakaeya's 50 annual anniversary event!　Around 50 number of people from different countries gathered in Omiya and shared time.

I also would like to share this wonderful memory with you! Let me report it like a live event.

13:30 participations are arriving and enjoy a welcoming photo shooting

Until 14:00 opening the event, they enjoyed looking at my exhibition about “Kimono and Saitama” and the tea ceremony.

Then 14:00! The event had started with Kris and Kahori’s comedy show!

at the Sakaeya Kimono Shop

on the happy occasion of its 50th birthday.

In the last two years I have become fascinated by the kimono and the way it reflects so many aspects of Japanese Culture. And all because of a visit to the Sakaeya Kimono Shop in February 2007. It was my first visit to Japan to visit my son Stevie, and the visit to the shop came only two days before I flew back to Britain. It was a delightful visit, meeting Kahori, her mother and her uncle and becoming more and more excited by the lovely vintage hand sewn fabric, embroidery and threadwork. The kimonos I brought back to my shop in England excited a lot of interest amongst my customers, and when Kahori came to visit later in the year she was able to demonstrate the tea ceremony and how to wear a kimono to two groups of enthusiastic ladies and gentlemen. They were fascinated and charmed by the insights into Japanese culture. The story of the event appeared in local newspapers and glossy magazines.

Interest in the kimonos also attracted English textile artists (one working with Japanese silks and the other wanting at apply the art of shibori to her designer knitwear)

It also attracted the attention of a Japanese lady who lives locally and is married to an Englishman. She was delighted to discover that we had awakened this interest in her culture and has gone on to organize a kimono event and a Japanese calligraphy class in my shop. I was able to wear one of the kimonos myself, as my costume in a local drama production when I played the part of an artistic ambassador’s wife of the 1920’s. Recently I was able to put on an exhibition of kimonos at Malvern Library, and we received a listing in a National newspaper.

The fabric of the kimono seems to be woven into the fabric of Japanese culture, and now our paths have crossed in many ways. I met Kahori in Singapore in February this year and introduced my friends there to her beautiful haori jackets. She also met my Japanese-American friend Gail, and was able to visit Gail’s family in California later in the year. And my niece Sally and her friend Jo had a wonderful experience in the Kimono shop trying on these graceful garments, and very much appreciated the kind and generous hospitality they received from Kahori and Keiko.

The kimono seems to me to provide a way through for us to cross the boundaries of culture and history. A gentle way to forge friendships and understandings. The kimono may have become unpopular and lost its meaning for young Japanese women during the Medan era, but look how it is working now as an ambassador for the people and culture of Japan.

Congratulations on the 50th birthday of the Sakaeya Kimono shop, and on the blossoming international interest that will inspire new generations of kimono wearers.

Kimono made in Saitama

It's become 4 years since I decided to work for the Kimono industry. Time flies. Although I was born as a Kimono shop's
daughter, I have never had any interest in Kimono. My knowledge of
Kimono was almost nothing. I am studying Kimono to catch up, but even
now I don't think I can make it and I'm not sure when I can find my
self "I done!" since Kimono is so deep.

Kimono has over 1000 years history and before our modernization,
every region were making their own original Kimono that fit their
climate and life. Futuremore, Kimono production is completely divided
into specialized labors so it became more and more complicated and
sophisticated. Therefore a variety of Kimono exists and the ideas are
deep. When I started working as a Kimono shop owner, I thought, "Maybe Kimono made in Saitama is good stepping stone since it is easier to find article about them and to meet someone who is related Kimono in Saitama" then I had started to study it.

Thanks to the subject, there has never been someone who studied it
(to my knowledge). TV Saitama introduced me when our shop had a
demonstration of Honjyo Ori. This year, I wrote about the crisis of
Yukata dying which was "Kagozome" on my blog. I got many positive
comments. These cheered me up a lot.

But I'm sure some of you might think, "Kimono made in Saitama
sounds strange". I can't deny that Saitama has litte character but
just another town close to Tokyo. But is it really so? Think about
Saitama, it is just next to Tokyo / Edo where has been a big and
important town and there were enough land to for silkworm raising, and some clear rivers for indigo dyeing. These circumstances were very good for Kimono making! Yes, we had Kimono in Saitama it support
Saitama people's life both then and also now.

I can only make a little exhibition about Kimono made in Saitama.
Saitama doesn't have world famous Kimono such "Oshima-tumugi" and
"Kaga-yuzen", but I'm assume if you know the background of them, you
may feel something special. This is what I wish more Japanese today
would feel!

Also, please come and have a look around and see the attendeed.
Including perhaps someone like you, who are not Japanese. You may
learn how Kimono has a cultural significance. Kimono attracts people.
Races, nationality, languages, gender, and generation have doesn't
matter.

My message for this exhibition is "From a Saitama micro point of
view, you may feel how Kimono is friendly. From a macro point world
view, you may feel how kimono gets attention and respect". I would
also like let Japanese know more about them and make Kimono more
popular among Japanese. I hope you enjoy this exhibition and support
Kimono.

Honjo-kasuri:

I’m very pleased to inform that our shop has become 50 years old at 20th of Sep in this year :) Our shop Sakaeya Kimono shop was founded at Omiya City by Sakae Ochi and his wife Keiko (Kahori’s parents) as well as Sakae’s younger brother Itsuo. Compared to other Kimono shop, 50years is not so long but maybe I can say that my parents and my uncle ware born in and raised in Shikoku so they ware new to this Omiya city, however, they managed to open and keep it for 50 years! Sakaeya was founded 50 years ago, on the 20th of September 1958 at Omiya City by the late Sakae Ochi and his wife Keiko (74) as well as Sakae’s younger brother Itsuo (74), who moved from Shikoku, Soother part of Japan. For 50 years, they had sweet and bitter memories. Sometimes they seriously thought to close the shop but they managed to keep, since they believe that Kimono is a wonderful part　and Japanese culture　so we should keep introducing it. A Yuzen ; a technique drew pictures on kimonos; artist will come to

Answer: Traditionally Kimono and Yukata did not required tailoring. They used to be made from a single piece of fabric called Tanmono. The proper method of purchasing a Yukata is first choose the Tanmono. Then the Kimono shop measures your body and then asks a professional needle men/women to sew the Tanmono to fit each individual. Though the sewing method for the kimono is quite simple, until World War 2 it was commonly said that women had to have this sewing skill in order to get married!

Nowadays so many shops sell pre made; already sewn Yukata into S/M/L size. It might be true it fits the modem society's request but I just want show you what is authentic Yukata style as a daughter who was born among a Kimono shop owners family.

Yukata tannmono ; a single piece of fabric is available at our shop since the middle of May. The Tanmono price is from 12000yen (both women and men)~. The process of hand sewing the yukata takes 2~3 weeks and the price is 12000yen~. All you need , when you were Yukata is Yukata and Obi ( price women 6000yen~ men 5000yen~ ) and Thin sashes to tie 100yen, Geta wooden
sandals for Yukata (premaid geta 1200yen~).

What is advantage to making Yukata from Tanmono?
The Yukata can be re-sewn and you can change the size! The tanmono is cut into eight strips. Two strips are both folded in half to form the panels covering the front and back of the body, and two smaller strips are folded similarly to become sleeves. The remaining four strips (as well as some additional smaller strips) are used on various areas, including the narrow front panel and collar.
Each part overlaps so they make extra space.　These extra spaces provide the kimono with extra length for adjusting height, width and sleeve size.

We are selling lager size Yukata tanmonos for women. Tamono has a set width so sometimes it is hard to sew to fit Non-Japnaese since we have different body lines. Therefore we made special size Yukata tanmono for Woman. They are bit wider than usual one.
